Hibs have been knocked back with an undisclosed bid for Dundee captain Luke McCowan.

Interest remains in the 26-year-old at Easter Road as he enters the final year of his deal with the Tayside club. EFL League One side Bolton Wanderers are also believed to have been rebuffed with a bid, with several other clubs keeping a close eye on McCowan's situation, as first reported by Sky Sports.

Dundee manager Tony Docherty confirmed in June that the club had opened talks over an extension with the former Ayr United star, but no agreement has yet been struck. Hibs would be required to increase their offer - and potentially fend off other suitors - to bring McCowan to Edinburgh this summer.

He came to the Dark Blues' rescue in a dramatic Dundee derby draw with rivals United on Sunday, tucking away a penalty to earn his team a point. Born in Greenock, McCowan joined Dundee in 2021. He has made 122 league appearances across the Premiership and Championship, and would fit the mould of a ready-made talent with a strong record in Scotland's top-flight.

Hibs remain keen to add to David Gray's squad following a chastening 3-0 defeat at St Mirren in Sunday's Premiership. Gray added Mykola Kukharevych to his forward line, and is reportedly close to securing veteran Canada international Junior Hoilett on a one-year deal. After Sunday's defeat in Paisley, the head coach was asked whether the result underlined the need for further work in the transfer market.

"I think there's more work to be done all the time," he replied. "Regardless of players coming, regardless of any of that, the performance that we had - especially in the first half - showed that what was in the squad is good enough. I think we need to be better in both boxes. I'd be much more concerned if we weren't creating any chances, we just need to be more clinical when they do come, because at this level we're not going to get five, six, seven chances to convert. That was evident today."
