Former Hibernian assistant manager John Potter has returned to Leith, joining David Gray’s backroom team as the head coach strengthens his coaching staff.

The 46-year-old, who previously worked under Jack Ross at both Sunderland and Hibs, reunites with Gray having first collaborated during Ross’ tenure at Easter Road.

Gray, who stepped into coaching following his playing career, has now brought Potter back to EH7 as part of his ongoing rebuild behind the scenes.

Speaking after the appointment was confirmed, the head coach said: "I’m delighted Potts has agreed to return to the club.

"He understands Hibs inside out and is someone who has really helped me as both a player and at the beginning of my coaching journey.

“He is a well-respected figure and his knowledge and expertise in the Scottish game will really help us take us forward next season.”

Sporting director Malky Mackay added: "We are really pleased to be able to bring someone of John’s calibre back into the building.

“He has a great relationship with David Gray and he brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience across Scottish football.

“He complements the current coaching set up very well, and we’re delighted to be able to bring in a coach with his qualities ahead of the start of the new season."

When Ross was sacked by Hibs in December 2021, Potter moved on to Championship side Queen's Park and served as Marijn Beuker's No.2 for six months before taking the manager's job at League One side Kelty Hearts.

He left after 11 months to take up a role as technical director at Raith Rovers, twice stepping in as caretaker manager, but left in February following the appointment of Dougie Imrie as manager.

Stark's Park chiefs said at the time that the position was 'a bit of a luxury' for a club of their size, with Imrie and assistant Andy Millen taking full control of the football department.

Potter now links up again with Gray as part of a coaching team that already includes Liam Craig, Eddie May and Craig Samson.

The latter is expected to continue his dual role as goalkeeping coach and set-piece specialist.
