Lewis Miller believes Nick Montgomery's guidance was pivotal on his journey to an Australia call-up.

The Hibs right-back could make his senior international debut against England at Wembley on Friday, after his impressive club form caught the eye of Socceroos boss Graham Arnold. Miller was given his break in senior football by Montgomery at Central Coast Mariners in the A-League, and has previously described the Hibs manager as a 'father figure'.

The 23-year-old admitted to being stunned when it emerged Montgomery was set to succeed Lee Johnson in the dugout, and is relishing the opportunity to work alongside him again. And he credited Montgomery with handing him the opportunity which has led him to the brink of a senior international cap with his country.

“He killed it at the Mariners," Miller told Australia's in-house media. "I came up with him through the academy. I had him for years and years and it is good to have him guide me again. He gave me the opportunity which has led me here.

"I have only been here a couple of days but already there is a standard difference. This is the standard I want to play week-in, week-out. I am very happy to be here.”

Miller has Martin Boyle for company in the Australia camp, and says the winger has been a vital guiding influence back in Scotland.

“I am finally glad to be here," said Miller. "There are a lot of lads I know or I am aware of through the A-League. Martin Boyle is also at Hibs and has made me feel really welcome.

“He is a great guy. If I have any questions, any problems with the league or anything I need to talk about then he is always there. He is a great role model and is doing well for the Socceroos and at Hibs.

“The Scottish Premiership is a very physical league. Technically, it is very good as well and the league is getting better and better. It is a great test for myself and I am just glad the league is going in the right direction.”
