Hibernian head coach David Gray believes his side are close to making everything click on the pitch.

Speaking as part of his pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday's Scottish Premiership clash against Dundee United at Easter Road, with the recent 3-2 defeat at Tannadice still fresh in the memory, Gray believes the performance against Hearts in last weekend's Edinburgh derby, plus the point and clean sheet against Ross County in midweek can be a springboard for his side to get a long-awaited victory as they attempt to move up the table.

"We dominated the game, we created enough chances, but we lacked that little bit of quality in the final third, whether it be the decision-making or the execution at the very end. That was the bit that let us down," Gray said.

"Normally, you would say on a Wednesday night that a 0-0 and a point away from home is a good result, but in the situation we find ourselves at the moment, we know we need more than that."

Against Hearts and Ross County, Hibs did fashion a number of chances but only had one goal to show for it in Mykola Kukharevych's bundled opener in the derby and after a strong defensive performance in Dingwall, Gray is urging his team to get it right in front of goal and put it all together.

"We're getting into the final third and creating a lot of chances. I'd have much more concern if we weren't doing that," he continued.

"We definitely need to be more clinical; it's something we've talked about and we're working hard at. We need to keep putting ourselves in these positions to miss them and we need to keep doing that.

"It might take ten runs to get one opportunity, we might get a bit of luck or the break of the ball, but that's how quickly it can change.  We need to keep working at it, keep putting ourselves in the positions to miss and hopefully it will turn, and I'm sure it will turn quickly."

Gray conceded on Wednesday night that confidence could be higher in the squad, and confirmed that both he and his backroom staff are doing all they can to ensure the players keep believing in themselves.

"The key for any player is that the more confident you are, the more likely you are to be successful. I keep putting belief into the players to trust that they are good players. They wouldn't be at this club if they weren't good players.

"Myself and my staff are trying to give the players that belief and freedom in the final third to go and express themselves. I think we're getting there, to the point of creating the chances, and it's just that final bit.

"I know a lot has been said in recent weeks about us defensively; the 0-0 midweek was positive in terms of getting the clean sheet, but the attention now is all about us not scoring enough goals.  We know we need to improve in both areas and we'll continue to work towards that."

Sunday's game is the third in a week but Gray believes it represents a great opportunity for Hibs to finally get that elusive second win which he believes can kickstart their season.

"I do believe we are one victory away from it clicking. The confidence and belief we can take from that one game can quickly change the narrative - we've just seen that at the weekend; the narrative about us being not good enough defensively. We then got a clean sheet against Ross County and the attention changes to the top end of the pitch.

"But until we've fully clicked and we're firing on all cylinders - which I know we will be - that's always going to be the challenge for the players and myself to try to overcome."
