Hibs head coach David Gray has confirmed his backroom staff - with three very familiar faces joining him in the dugout.

Liam Craig, who spent two seasons at Easter Road between 2013 and 2015 and served as captain, returns to Leith as one of two assistant coaches. The former St Johnstone midfielder has held coaching roles at McDiarmid Park as well as at Arbroath and most recently Queen's Park, where he was Callum Davidson's right-hand man.

He will be joined by another former Hibs player in Eddie May. The boyhood Hibee made more than 100 appearances for the club in the late Eighties before moving on to stints with Brentford, Falkirk, Motherwell, Dunfermline, Airdrie, Western Knights in Australia, and Berwick Rangers before returning to the Bairns to finish his playing career.

May spent 27 games in charge at Falkirk and returned to Hibs as academy manager in 2014, but when he took interim charge of the first team following Neil Lennon's departure in 2019, he categorically stated he had no interest in becoming a manager again in his own right. He took the team again on a caretaker basis following Paul Heckingbottom's exit before Jack Ross was named the Yorkshireman's successor. May has remained at the club in a variety of roles and was most recently loans manager, although he has been involved each time Gray has taken interim charge of the team.

The third member of Gray's backroom staff is Craig Samson, who returns to Easter Road to take up the position of goalkeeping coach after fulfilling the same role at Aberdeen under Jim Goodwin, Neil Warnock, Barry Robson, Peter Leven, and Stephen Glass. The former St Mirren 'keeper was brought to Hibs by Ross, who installed him as goalie coach, but he left the club shortly after Ross and assistant John Potter were relieved of their duties in December 2021.

Gray had been linked with a move for Hearts B team boss Liam Fox, but the Tynecastle coach indicated he would prefer to stay in Gorgie rather than cross the city divide.

Hibs' footballing staff is now complete following the departure of Nick Montgomery with Gray serving as head coach with May and Craig as his two assistants and Samson as goalkeeping coach, while former Hibs No.1 David Marshall has moved upstairs to a technical performance manager role, working under sporting director Malky Mackay.

The departure of former director of football Brian McDermott was confirmed by the club last week, with the ex-Reading boss saying: "There are so many good things happening at Hibernian. It is fair to say the outcome we wanted last season did not happen. There have been obvious consequences from that outcome.

"What I will say is it was never from lack of effort and desire. Sometimes in life and football things do not work out. The only thing to be done is to get up and go again.

“The supporters of the club followed the team loyally throughout the season. I hope in the future the club gets the results their support deserves.”
