Hibs will be desperate to improve on last season’s hugely disappointing Scottish Premiership campaign when the new season rolls around in August.

Under Lee Johnson and, latterly, Nick Montgomery, the Hibees finished eighth in the table, with two interim stints taken on by now permanent manager David Gray. The Easter Road side missed out on the top six in the final pre-split fixture, and played out a low-key end to the term in the bottom-half.

The league was won by Celtic, who pulled away from Rangers across the final weeks of the season. At the other end, Livingston finished bottom and were relegated to the Championship. Ross County entered into the play-off but retained their top-flight status with victory over Raith Rovers.

The Premiership is the highest domestic league in Scotland, and was first established all the way back in 1890. It has undergone several rebrands since then, starting out as the Scottish Football League. Before being repackaged as the Scottish Premiership in 2013, it was known as the Scottish Premier League, which evolved on from its previous incarnation as the Scottish Premier Division.

The Scottish Premiership consists of 12 teams contesting a 38-game season. After 33 matchdays, the division splits in two to form a top six and bottom six. For the final five rounds of fixtures, teams only play against sides in their half of the league.
