David Gray won't be sacked by the Hibernian board despite just one win in 12 Scottish Premiership matches - but the head coach remains under pressure to turn things around for the Easter Road side, who lost 2-1 to St Mirren at the weekend.

Urgent discussions took place on Monday to address the current situation, with the club bottom of the league. But the 36-year-old, who was named the permanent successor to Nick Montgomery in June after serving four stints as interim manager, will be backed by the club to get things right on the pitch.

A statement from the club's board read: "We are disappointed with the poor start to our current season like all Hibernian FC supporters.

"Following the weekend’s result, we have held discussions as a group addressing how we move forward. We continue to work tirelessly in our quest to improve our performance and achieve the results we need on the pitch.

"Through this challenging time, we support our head coach David Gray and his management team. All departments are under pressure to deliver.

"We recognise that this is a hard time for our supporters, and we know we can do better. Together, with Black Knight Football Club, we are working hard to make that happen."

Black Knight duo Bill Foley and Ryan Caswell, who sit on the club's board, and Black Knight president Tim Bezbatchenko, were in unanimous agreement with the other directors that Gray should remain in post - with an understanding that things have to improve, or changes will need to be made.

As part of the club's efforts to support Gray and his coaching staff, they will continue to work closely with the Black Knights to make improvements.

It remains to be seen what those improvements will look like, particularly with the January transfer window still some time away, but Hibs and the Black Knights have been working closely behind the scenes for some time now, with regular meetings taking place with a view to improving matters on the pitch for Hibs.

Speaking in the aftermath of the 2-1 defeat by St Mirren at the weekend, Gray said: "I fully understand the noise; rightly so and justifiably so, because of where this club is at the moment.

"We've talked a lot about it being a new squad and I could come up with 101 excuses, but where we find ourselves isn't good enough. Until someone tells me differently, I'm going to try as hard as I can and will continue to work as hard as I possibly can because no one's more frustrated than me.

"I know what's in the group and what we can be. It's about everybody working as hard as we can and sticking together to make sure we get through this period."
